The game isn't as difficult as gamefaqs said, after you learn how to defeat the first two warrior types you can walk around freely and discover things ,but ,learning the other patterns of the new warriors will be another task.

A well done RPG, Axe Battler is one for the road. What could be better on a long trip than a portable RPG? The graphics are fair, and the story is entertaining. Axe Battler will take a good bit more dexterity to solve than most other RPGs, however. The side-view battles require fast reaction time and some fighting skills to conquer. Overall, Axe Battler is a nice addition to the Game Gear title library.
Ax Battler isn't what I imagined it to be, but I enjoyed playing it. It kind of reminds me of Shining Force, but not exactly the same concept. The graphics are nice and the music is cool too. I do find the game a bit on the difficult side, but it doesn't have to stay that way if I play it more. If you have the Genesis version of Golden Axe in mind, you won't find it on the Game Gear. RPG gamers will enjoy this one. I picked it up for a decent price on here about three years ago and it was complete. If this game is of interest to you, be sure to pick it up. It comes up complete every now and then.
